Picture Books List: Art Study

Here is a list of a few of Hailey’s favorite books about art, or particularly artistic picture books. You can talk about illustration styles, you can create your own art activity to accompany one of these books (check out our suggestions), or just enjoy the beautiful pictures. This is a shorter book list, with the goal to get you creating your own art!

I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont and David Catrow

Not the best example of grammatically correct words and sentences, but a great look at fun colors and a silly rhyming book!

Pair this book with an abstract painting activity, or a handprint painting activity.

The Dot by Peter Reynolds

Are you having artist’s block? Can’t think of what to draw next? This is the perfect book for you and your kids.

Pair this book with a dot on a paper in a color of your choice, walk away and come back and draw the first thing that comes to mind from your dot…or leave it a dot. :)

Use Your Imagination by Nicola O’Byrne

This book is focused more on story creation and using your imagination in general, and part of that is making pictures in your head. Read along with wolf and the clever rabbit as they create a story.

Pair this book with a painting activity starting with a character or “once upon a time…”. Pick a favorite animal character, or a few, and give them some fun attire. Then add a background or setting to surround your characters. If starting with “once upon a time…”, put that at the top of your page and tell your child to create their own scene on the page, or work on this together with a larger page.
