Picture Books List: Animal Adventures
Here is a list of a few of Hailey’s favorite seaside stories - books about the beach, or other bodies of water, and life nearby. Some of these books are shorter and geared toward younger kids, and some, like Pond, are picture books for slightly older kids. Don’t see one you love listed here? Let us know and we’ll add it! The Lion and The Mouse by Jerry Pinkney
This is Jerry Pinkney’s illustrated adaptation of the classic fable of the lion and the mouse. This is a wordless picture book, but you can easily follow along with the original story or simply let the pictures be your guide!
Hot Dog by Doug Salati
Read about the adventures of a stubborn and adorable dachshund and his owner. I love the images in this book, and it will make you long for a day by the sea!
Mouse Soup by Arnold Lobel
This is a classic for a reason! Read along as a clever mouse tells the stories of ingredients in order to get out of being included as one of them. Don’t forget to check out our recipe for mouse soup while you’re here. Another great book by the same author: Grasshopper on the Road
But No Elephants by Jerry Smath
This is an older picture book, but still a ton of fun! I would highly recommend getting this book from the library or your local used bookstore.

If You Give A Cat A Cupcake by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond
If you give a cat a cupcake you might just end up on a wild adventure, and where will it end? Read and find out. :) If you like this story, be sure and check out others in the “If you give a…” series. Two other favorites of Hailey’s are “If You Take A Mouse to the Movies” and “If You Give a Pig a Pancake”, but don’t forget about the classic: “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”.
Wild Symphony by Dan Brown and Susan Batori
This is such a musical, lyrical book! So much so, you can scan the QR code in the book and listen to music while you read. Even without the music, the rhymes and poems in this book are a joy to read and listen to.
Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson and Tiphanie Beeke
A book about Fletcher the fox warning everyone that snow is on the way again! …But is it?
Peep Leap by Elizabeth Verdick and John Bendall-Brunello
Follow along with this mother duck and her little ducklings as she teaches them to jump, swim, and be brave!
Bread and Jam for Frances by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban
This is a longer picture book, so I recommend it for slightly older kids. It’s a book about little Frances, the picky eater who only eats bread and jam. Follow along as she gets very tired of it and learns to eat more variety!
The Snail and the Whale by by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
A snail that wants to adventure, and a whale friend to take him along. Read along on their journey across the sea, and watch the little snail save the day!
The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone Roach
A silly story about a bear, and his journey to eating a little girl’s sandwich…told by her little dog, do you believe him?
Sea Dog by Astrid Sheckels
I love this author’s illustration style! Here is the first book in what is now a little series, if you enjoy this book be sure to check out her other Sea Dog adventures.
