Picture Books List: Characters Using AAC
Here is a list of a few of Hailey’s favorite books that feature characters using AAC - augmentative and alternative communication. Some of these books are shorter and geared toward younger kids, and some are picture books for slightly older kids. Don’t see one you love listed here? Let us know and we’ll add it! A Day With No Words by Tiffany Hammond
A boy is using his high-tech AAC device, his tablet, to communicate with pictures and show what he means. It is aimed to highlight that verbal speech is not the only way to communicate and connect with those around you, and the mom does a fantastic job of modeling in this story!
My Brother Otto and the Birthday Party by Meg Raby and Elisa Pallmer
The characters in this book are all animal friends, and the bird brother and sister are preparing for their friend’s birthday party. The brother bird, Otto, is autistic and use’s a tablet. There are a lot of explanations on autism, AAC devices, non-verbal communication and feelings.
Bitsy Bat, Team Star by Kaz Windness
This is one book in the Bitsy Bat series, which follows Bitsy Bat and her experiences at school. Enzo is a new student who uses a tablet and sign language to communicate. I love the illustrations!
Jo’s Special Gifts by Mariam Shapera
This is a rhyming book about a little boy with autism! He uses words to communicate, and also has his tablet available throughout the story. This is a good one for supporting other kids in learning more about a child with autism and Jo’s strengths and differences.
We Are The Scrappy Ones by Rebekah Taussig and Kirbi Fagan
I have not had a chance to read this book yet, but have heard good things. It is about kids with a variety of disabilities and their experiences in the world.
Dancing With Daddy by Anitra Rowe Schulte and Ziyue Chen
This book is about a little girl who is excited about going to a dance with her dad. She uses pictures in a book to communicate throughout the story. This is such a cute story about a father daughter dance!
Artie Is Awesome by
This is a book about how all kids are different, and then specifically introduces Artie. Artie is a new kid at school and the narrator explains Artie’s differences and strengths throughout the book, and explains that Artie has autism. He uses a communication device!

AAC Rhyme Time by Amanda Hartmann and Nanhee Ha
This book was written by a SLP, and has a lot of words that rhyme with AAC! There are AAC and different devices included throughout the book. How Katie Got A Voice is another option for a book written by a SLP! That book is written by Patricia Mervine.
More than Words: So Many Ways to Say What We Mean by Roz MacLean
I love the color and flowing thought bubbles included in Roz MacLean’s illustrations! This is a book about words, and all of the many different ways people communicate.
Garbanzo and the Big Parade by Claire Schmitt
This is a harder to find picture book about AAC user Garbanzo and the parade he has for his new neighbor. I have not found it yet to actually get to read, but have heard good things about it!

Me and My AAC by Tabitha Cabrera and Michael Barnett
This author has other books about AAC as well, like Don’t You Talk The Way I Talk. This story is actually written and illustrated with AAC buttons as the way to read the book. A very unique offering!
Private Eye, Romeo Riley: The Boy Who Saw Too Much by April M. Whitt
This is a chapter book series starring a boy with cerebral palsy, who uses AAC to communicate. Another one I have not had the chance to read yet, but it is on my list!
